Tracks, rollers and cables

Garage door track repair when the door has come off track

Garage door track repair covers the steel rails the door rolls in and the rollers that ride inside them. A door has two vertical tracks, two horizontal tracks overhead, and a curved piece that joins each pair. If any of them is bent, loose or out of line, the rollers jump out, the door goes crooked, and it may stop halfway or hang at an angle with one side higher than the other.

The usual causes are a car bumping the door or the track, mounting bolts that have worked loose over years of vibration, a worn roller that finally slips out, or a broken cable on one side that lets that corner drop. A door that is off center in the opening, rubbing one jamb or pulling to one side is already telling you the tracks have moved.

If the door is off track right now, leave it alone. The springs are still holding the weight of the door, and forcing it, or running the opener, can bend the rail further or drop the door. Tell us what you see and we will come out, release the rollers safely and fix whatever pushed them off.

Track inspection

What we check and what the options are

Is the track bent or just loose?

Loose bolts and brackets can usually be tightened and the track brought back square. A track with a crease or kink has to be replaced, because hammering it flat rarely leaves a smooth path for the rollers.

Roller condition

Rollers with flat spots, cracked nylon or seized bearings are a common reason a door leaves the track. We replace the worn ones, and match the stem and wheel size to the track so they sit properly.

Cables and spring balance

A snapped or slipped cable lets one side of the door fall and pulls the rollers out of the track. We check both cables and the spring tension before the door goes back on its rails.

Panels and hinges

When a door has been hit hard enough to bend the track, the bottom panel and hinges are often twisted too. We look at them before the door is put back in service.

Alignment and clearance

Both vertical tracks need to be plumb and parallel, with the same small gap to the door edges. We set that clearance so the door closes square and stops rubbing.

Start to finish

How a track repair goes

  1. 01

You tell us what the door did

Tell us whether it came off on one side or both, whether anything hit it, and whether you heard a bang first. That helps us bring the right track and rollers.

  2. 02

We come out and secure the door

Our uniformed technicians make the door safe, because a door that is off track can shift without warning, then look at the tracks, rollers, cables and spring.

  3. 03

We explain what we found and the price

You get the explanation in plain words and an upfront quote before any work begins, including whether the track can be straightened or needs to be replaced.

  4. 04

We repair it and test the door

We re-seat or replace the rollers, fix or swap the track, set the alignment and run the door through full cycles. A track repair is usually finished in one visit, and our repairs are backed by a parts-and-labor warranty.

Common questions

Track repair questions

Can I push my garage door back on track myself?
It is not a good idea. The door is still under spring tension, and the bottom bracket that holds the cable is under heavy load. Forcing the rollers back can bend the track more or let the door fall. Leave it alone, keep the opener off, and have a technician release it safely.
Why does my garage door keep coming off track?
A door that keeps leaving the track has an underlying cause that was not fixed: a bent rail, loose mounting hardware, worn rollers, or a cable that is stretching on one side. Putting the rollers back in without correcting that cause only buys time. We find what is pushing the door out of line.
Is it cheaper to repair the track or replace the door?
Repairing the track is the lower cost when the panels are straight and only the rail or rollers are damaged. If several panels are creased or the door was dragged hard along the floor, a replacement door can make more sense. We tell you which applies when we have seen the damage.
What drives the price of a garage door track repair?
Mostly the parts and the damage. Replacing a set of rollers is a small job. Replacing a bent track, or the cables and bottom brackets that went with it, takes more parts and time. The price is quoted up front, before any work begins.
Is it safe to use the door if it only rubs or scrapes?
Better not to. A rubbing door means the track or rollers have moved, and the opener is working harder than it should. Open it by hand only if it moves freely, and call us before the rollers escape completely.
Why does a cable slip off the drum when the door comes off track?
When a door jumps the track, one side drops and that cable goes slack, so it can slip off its drum. Rewinding it wrongly leaves the door uneven. This is where spring repair and track repair overlap, so we check the balance at the same visit.
