Dents, creases and cracks

Garage door panel replacement, one panel or the whole door

A garage door is built from a stack of horizontal panels joined by hinges and guided by rollers in the tracks. Garage door panel replacement means taking out the damaged panel and fitting a new one in its place, without changing the rest of the door. It is possible when a matching panel is still made for your door, with the same height, thickness, face pattern, color and insulation.

Panels get damaged in a few ordinary ways. A bumper presses in the bottom panel while backing out. A basketball or a bike handlebar leaves a dent. A door that slipped off its track bends a panel across its middle. Old steel doors crack along the hinge points, and wood faced doors can split or rot at the bottom edge. A small, shallow dent is cosmetic. A crease through the steel weakens the whole panel, and the door can start to flex and bind in the track.

The top and bottom panels carry different hardware from the middle ones, so replacing either needs the right part. When the damage is limited to one panel, we say so and quote that job alone. When several panels are damaged, or the door is old enough that nothing matches, we say that too.

What we check and what your options are

How deep the damage goes

We check whether a dent has creased the steel, cracked a hinge mount or bent the edge that the next panel seats against. A surface dent and a structural crease are different jobs.

Can the panel be matched?

We match the panel height, the face pattern (flat, raised or ribbed), the thickness, the insulation and the color. If the exact panel is no longer made, we explain what the close options look like.

Single panel or full replacement

A single new panel suits a door that is otherwise straight and sound. A door with several damaged panels, or heavy fading and rust, may be better served by a full door replacement.

Hinges, struts and hardware

A new panel gets fresh hinges and the right brackets, and we add a reinforcing strut where the door's width calls for one. Reusing a bent hinge on a new panel does not hold.

Spring balance afterward

A new insulated panel weighs more than a thin steel one, and that changes the load on the springs. We check and adjust the balance after the swap so the opener is not left doing the lifting. If a spring is already tired, replacing the spring at the same visit makes sense.

We explain what we found and the price

You hear whether one panel will do or whether the whole door needs attention, and you get an upfront quote before any work begins.

  4. 04

We replace the panel and rebalance the door

We release the spring tension safely, swap the panel, refit the hinges and hardware, restore the balance and test the door. Our repairs and installations are backed by a parts-and-labor warranty.

Panel answers

Panel replacement questions

Can you replace just one garage door panel?
Yes, when a matching panel is available for your door. The panel has to fit the same height, thickness, face pattern and insulation, and it helps if the door is still in good shape. If the door is old and nothing matches, we tell you what the options look like.
Is it cheaper to fix a damaged panel or replace the whole garage door?
A single panel is usually less money than a new door, and it keeps the rest of the door in service. Once several panels are damaged, or the door is worn out in other ways, a new door may be better value. The quote makes it clear.
Can a dented garage door panel be fixed without replacing it?
A shallow dent without a crease can sometimes be left alone or eased out, and it does not affect how the door works. A crease, a split or a bend across the panel cannot be reliably repaired, because the steel stays weak. We look at it and tell you honestly which kind it is.
What decides the price of a panel replacement?
The size and type of the panel, whether it is insulated, how hard the color is to match, and the hardware that goes with it. Rebalancing the springs is part of the work. The price comes as an upfront quote before any work begins.
Is it safe to use a door with a damaged panel?
A cosmetic dent is fine to live with. A bent or cracked panel should not be run on the opener, because it can bind in the tracks, put strain on the hinges and drag on the opener. If the door looks twisted, stop using it and call us.
Will homeowners insurance pay for a damaged garage door panel?
It depends on your policy and on what caused the damage. Storm damage and accidental damage can be treated differently, and the deductible may be more than the repair. Your insurer makes that decision, so ask before the work if you plan to file. We explain what we found so you can describe it accurately.
